We all know the danger of getting a hand caught by a trap so I should be able to see the funny side of my experience if it wasn't for a very swollen and painful hand --and before you laugh, -no it is not what you are thinking!. I stopped by the box near the Mission House driveway to replace the string/flag and having slid the lid sideways I but my hand on the side of he box to pull up the wire hook on the top of he kill bar when I felt a sharp pain on the palm of my hand. As I pulled my hand away I noticed something fall to the ground and on inspection saw a very large wasp, I had been stung. It seems very early for queen wasps to be hibernating but this could be a lesson to all trappers,--just check the top of the box once the lid has been moved, meanwhile I am wallowing in self pity as I don't expect you guys will give me any(:-)

Gwynneth knows how you feel Jean.
Last week we were transplanting some flaxes onto a bank we had previously cleared of bracken. Gwyn was digging a hole and disturbed a wasp's nest in the bracken roots. She got stung three times before she could get away. It could have been much worse..
We will bring down some Carbaryl next time. This seems to be the way to deal with the nest.
