Jean has indicated that the A24 traps require testing to see whether the pressure in the gas canister is maintained. Some of the traps have a gas leak and do not remain effective. These traps will need to be returned to Jean for replacement.

Jan 30th Checked Mike's A24-1 suspecting gas leak but it fired so we can presume it had been interfered with previously.

The repaired traps have arrived back. Some to go to Oreti South and some to Jim Talbot. Collect new gas, use current caps and dispensers just bring the trap back. Genie

To find animals killed by these traps it pays to look around the general area. I have found rats 5 m away

19th Feb 2014. I have been gradually checking A24 traps as we need to set up a system working on the theory that the gas lasts 4-6 months. This timing has been reached as it is not likely any one trap will kill 24 rats. Checking the gas in February and July each year should be sufficient for the gas but each time a trapper passes a A24 if the cap is taken off the dispenser removed and banged hard to bring down the lure, then replaced, that should be sufficient with a dab of peanut butter on the tree.

Feb. 2014. The aim is to replace the gas cylinders in all A24 traps in February and July of each year, if not more often. This has now been completed. If the cylinder shows signs of having been chewed the trap needs to be fired as the gas may indeed be empty. The caps need to be removed and dispensers checked at each visit.

Good morning (from Jean), Finding one eaten lure bottle was a surprise but finding two was a shock! It shows that servicing the A24 traps is below standard as had the gas cylinders been operating the mice would have been killed before they could do this damage. We have a plan in place now to check the gas cylinders once a month, in between times the counters should indicate if the trap fired. Making sure that the mix in the lure bottle has not set in a plug behind the nozzle is also important. Just another learning curve for us all.
